Tripura, one of India's smallest states and the second-most densely populated state in the northeast after Sikkim, occupies a peculiar geographic position - surrounded on three sides (north, west, and south) by Bangladesh, with only a narrow corridor connecting it to the rest of India through Assam. This near-encirclement by a foreign country has profound implications for Tripura's transport ecosystem. The Tripura Transport Department manages RTO offices across all 8 districts, with the main office in Agartala (TR-01), the state capital. All vehicles registered in Tripura carry the TR prefix.
Agartala is just 2 kilometres from the Bangladesh border at Akhaura, making Tripura a critical gateway for India-Bangladesh trade. The Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post (ICP), inaugurated in 2021, enables formal cross-border trade and people movement. For the first time, Bangladesh has become a transit route for goods from Tripura to other northeastern states, and the TR-01 RTO manages permits for vehicles carrying cross-border trade goods through this corridor. Bangladesh's Chittagong port, accessed via Tripura, could significantly reduce transport costs for Tripura's industries compared to the long land route through the "Chicken's Neck" to Kolkata port.
