Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 2000 and has since emerged as one of India's most important states for mining, power generation, and steel production. The Chhattisgarh Transport Department manages RTO offices across all 33 districts, with the state capital Raipur (CG-01) housing the largest office. All CG-registered vehicles carry the CG prefix, and the state has been on a strong vehicle registration growth trajectory as urbanization and industrial development create new transport demand.
Chhattisgarh produces approximately 15% of India's total steel and is home to some of the country's largest thermal power plants. The Korba cluster alone hosts National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company (CSPGCL), and multiple private power producers. This energy and steel complex generates enormous demand for heavy vehicles - coal transport trucks, steel coil carriers, and oversize load vehicles carrying turbines and heavy equipment. The CG-13 (Korba) and CG-11 (Raigarh) RTOs are among the state's most active in heavy vehicle registrations.
Chhattisgarh has the highest forest coverage of any Indian state, with approximately 44% of its area under forest. Large parts of Bastar division (Jagdalpur, Dantewada, Sukma, Bijapur) have historically been affected by Left-Wing Extremism (Naxalism). Transport in these areas has unique security dimensions - commercial vehicles operating in Naxal-affected zones require coordination with security forces, and the RTO offices in these districts manage vehicle permits under security protocols not found elsewhere in India.
