Daman and Diu, now merged with Dadra and Nagar Haveli under a unified UT administration, continues to use the vehicle registration prefix DD for vehicles originally registered in its two coastal territories. DD-01 covers Daman (the larger of the two, on the Gujarat coast near the Gujarat-Maharashtra border), while DD-02 covers Diu (the smaller island off the southern tip of the Kathiawar Peninsula in Gujarat). The merged UT's RTO offices manage both DD and DN-coded vehicles under a unified administration.
Diu is famous for two things: its Portuguese colonial architecture and its status as a dry-state exception. Diu - unlike dry Gujarat surrounding it - permits alcohol sales, making it a major weekend destination for Gujaratis. This generates an interesting transport dynamic: a large influx of GJ-registered vehicles from Gujarat, combined with local DD-registered vehicles and tourist rental bikes. The Diu sub-RTO manages permits for the island's growing tourist rental vehicle fleet, which ranges from gearless scooters to jeeps for fort sightseeing.
