Mizoram, a small but distinctive state in India's far northeast, shares international borders with Bangladesh to the west and Myanmar to the east and south. With over 91% literacy rate - the second highest in India - Mizoram has a highly educated population that increasingly aspires to vehicle ownership. The Mizoram Transport Department manages RTO offices across all 11 districts, with the main office in Aizawl (MZ-01), the state capital perched on a ridge at 1,100 metres elevation. All Mizoram-registered vehicles carry the MZ prefix.
Aizawl is one of India's most dramatically situated state capitals, built on a narrow ridge with roads winding up and down steep slopes. The city's road network is a series of hairpin turns and single-lane passages that make traffic management uniquely challenging. Despite its small size, Aizawl has a serious traffic congestion problem - the high vehicle ownership rate combined with limited road width creates bottlenecks that the MZ-01 RTO and city traffic police work continuously to address.
